This search function depends on the selection you made using the buttons for 'spots', 'pictures', 'users' or 'aniVarsities'. This allows you to narrow down your search results reasonably. If you for example would like to search for restaurants in New York you have to toggle 'Spots', select 'Eating' in the Drop Down menu, type 'New York' in the search field and press enter. (At the moment we're still short of articles so maybe you won't find anything...)
The same procedure applies for all other kinds of articles as well as for users or pictures...
So just always make sure that you have chosen the right category for your search...

How to navigate on the map:
Double click to zoom in
Press Shift + Drag mouse to select a zooming area
Drag mouse to pan
Buttons above the map:
Those buttons and also the drop down menu influence the content of the markers shown on the map. Here you can choose the kind of article you are looking for or swap to pictures or users. This selection also influences the search function (see above)
Buttons on the map:
Click the arrows to pan
Click the globe for the initial worldmap
Click the arrow on the right to select a different layer
Click on the markers to get a description of their content
