Description

The famous Oktoberfest or Wiesn (pronounced veezn) is a two-week Bavarian festival held since 1810 on the Theresienwiese in Munich, Germany. It usually takes place the 16 days up to and including the first Sunday of October. About six million visitors are attending it every year.

Most booths and fairground attractions are open starting at 9:00 or 10:00. Local Munich breweries serve beverages and food in Bierzelts (beer tents) until 22:30. Rides can be used until 23:30 on weekdays and midnight on the weekend.

Entry fees

  • The entry to the Theresienwiese is for free.
  • Prices for food and beverages are usually high: You usually have to spend 10 to 20 € for food and beer ranges from 7.30 up to 7.90 €.

How to get there

It's usually best to use the very good public transportation system of Munich:

S-Bahn stations:

  • S1 to S8: Hackerbrücke
  • S7 and S27: Heimeranplatz and then U4 or U5

U-Bahn stations:

  • U3 and U6: Goetheplatz and Poccistraße
  • U4 and U5: Theresienwiese or Schwanthalerhöhe

Hints

Beer is usually served as 1 liter (Maß) and 0.5 liter (Halbe) quantities.

Be sure to keep the receipt if you buy a Oktoberfest beer mug. Stealing a mug can be fined up to 50 €.
