Description

Munich (München) is the million-strong capital of Bavaria as well as the third largest city in Germany. Its proximity to the Alps and the Bavarian life-style make it one of the most popular cities that Germans want to live in. The prosperous city also offers many pieces of beautiful architecture a diverse cultural life with theatres, operas, or museums. Certainly, one of the most famous cultural events is the annual Oktoberfest visited by many beer-loving tourists. But there are further festivals like the Tollwood Festival as well.

History

The exact date of Munich foundation is unclear. It is assumed that is was founded in 1158 and thus the city celebrated its 850th "birthday" in 2008.

  • Fußgängerzone: Pedestrian shopping zone in the city's center.
  • Rathaus: The city hall of Munich with its famous Rathaus-Glockenspiel
  • Peterskirche: The oldest church of the inner city.
  • Frauenkirche: Munich's famous landmark and probably the most famous church of the city
  • The Residenz is a beautiful palace complex
  • Cuvilliés Theatre: A beautiful rococo theater that was recently restored
  • Königsplatz
  • Nymphenburg Palace
  • Englischer Garten: The 3.7 km² large park is probably the best place for recreation in Munich
  • Munich's Olympic Park was built for the 1972 Olympic Summer Games

Transportation

Munich can be easily reached by car. There are several Autobahn highways surrounding the city.
Moreover Munich is connected to most European cities by train as well. The Hauptbahnhof station is Munich's central junction for international train traffic. The very good public transport system consists of underground trains (U-Bahn) and the urban railway S-Bahn which can be used to get nearly every point in the city.
Munich International Airport—Germany's second biggest airport—is the starting point for everyone who is traveling *by plane*.

Shopping

Munich's center provides a very good pedestrian shopping zone: the Fußgängerzone. Mid-priced goods can be bought in the Kaufingerstraße while high-priced luxury good can be found in Maximilianstraße.
