Astana (Астана) is the capital city of Kazakhstan and its second largest city (behind Almaty).
In 1824 the city was founded as Akmola (Holy Place). After many changes to its name, in 1994, the city was renamed to Astana (The Capital City) and got the capital of the newly-independent Kazakhstan.
